Mrs. Juanita Moore, a 1968 graduate of Fairmont High School, gave a generous gift through the Fairmont class of 1968 group to benefit local students. The Fairmont class of 1968 issued checks to three Griffin-Spalding County School System (GSCS) schools to help with their clothes closets which benefit students in need of clothing items.
In an effort coordinated by Griffin-Spalding Board of Education Member R. Syntel Brown, representatives of the class of 1968 presented their three partner schools with checks in the amounts of $2,000 for Moore Elementary, $1,000 for Atkinson Elementary and $1,000 for Anne Street Elementary.
Mrs. Moore’s donation continues a legacy of generosity that the Fairmont class of 1968 has built through their partnerships and gifts. Mrs. Moore attended Moore Elementary, Fairmont High and then graduated from Tennessee State University (c/o 1985). She earned a degree in social work and retired from the State of Tennessee Mental Health Department.
Fairmont 1968 Class Member Raymond Head III shared, “When the class of ’68 group began we decided that we wanted to be about more than social gatherings. It is important for us to give back to our community by benefitting the children. It is a labor of love.”
Moore Elementary was the school that most of the Fairmont class of ’68 attended so they made it their signature school. They hold a coat drive at Moore each year and partner with the school in many ways. Susie B. Atkinson was a first-grade teacher to many of the members, so it was a natural fit for the group to also partner with Atkinson Elementary. The group also adopted Anne Street Elementary and has built picnic tables, provided a washer and dryer and serve as active Partners in Education with them as well. The class of ’68 also provides teacher appreciation gifts to all three schools.
Board Member R. Syntel Brown expressed gratitude on behalf of GSCS for the influence the Fairmont Class of 1968 has on Griffin-Spalding students and staff.
