eclipse

On Monday, April 8, 2024, a solar eclipse will pass over North America, a rare phenomenon providing a learning opportunity for our students. During a total solar eclipse, the moon completely blocks the sun, causing the sky to become dark during the daytime. Here in Spalding County, we will not be in the path of the total solar eclipse, but we will experience a partial solar eclipse between 1:45 p.m. and 4:20 p.m., with the sky becoming darkest at the peak of 3:04 p.m.

Monday, April 8, is our first day back from spring break and will be a normal school day for our district. School operations, including check-in and check-out procedures, and all extra-curricular and athletic events will continue as normal. To ensure a safe school day and dismissal, solar-viewing glasses will be provided to all Pre-K through 12th-grade students and teachers.

While this natural phenomenon does provide a unique learning opportunity and is an exciting experience for our students, we urge parents to review the attached safety precautions and discuss them with your child(ren) to ensure the safety of their eyes.
