Community Member Cheryl Walker contacted the Griffin-Spalding County School System (GSCS) with a desire to give back and help students. Walker was put in contact with GSCS Social Worker Keisha McGill who helped identify students with back to school needs. On August 23, at special ceremonies held at Cowan Road Elementary and Moreland Road Elementary, Walker presented gift cards and presents to nine families totaling 22 GSCS students.
“I come from a large family of love and am always looking for a way to bless others. I was sitting at my desk a few weeks ago and thought about it being back to school time. All of the sudden I had a strong feeling come over me to help some students. I shared my idea with my colleagues and together we were able to provide resources to over 20 students,” said Cheryl Walker.
Walker is a senior commercial sales manager at First American whose territory spans from Atlanta to the Florida line. She has over 24 years of experience in the finance industry.
GSCS Social Worker Keisha McGill stated, “I am elated that Mrs. Walker is so generous and chose to help our families. It takes a village to raise a child. This is a blessing for our families. We are so thankful for community support.”

Middle School Athletics Changes Due to Heat: GSCS is expecting severe heat Tuesday-Thursday this week that is expected to exceed the WBGT allowed by our district regulations for outdoor extracurricular activities. Per our regulation, additional precautions start with a measure WBGT of 82. With a WBGT higher than 87, football players are restricted from wearing full pads, and over 92 no outdoor workouts can take place.
To combat these anticipated high temperatures, the following schedule adjustments have been made:

The annual GSCS Middle School football jamboree will be hosted by Rehoboth Road Middle School at Griffin's Memorial Stadium (310 E. Poplar Street, Griffin GA) on Saturday, August 19.
Tickets and concessions are cash-only.
GSCS operates under a "clear bag" policy for all athletic events and spectators may be subject to a security screening.

Griffin-Spalding Partners In Education is holding its 22nd Annual Partners In Education Golf Tournament on Friday, September 29, at the Griffin City Park Golf Course. All proceeds benefit the students and teachers of GSCS by providing field trip/classroom grants and teacher scholarships. Please consider sponsoring/participating. We would love your support!

GSCS transportation is resuming at 4:30 pm. The severe weather has passed and is now safe for busses. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Spalding County is under a severe thunderstorm warning until 4:30 p.m. Buses have returned students to their schools until the storm passes. It is not safe to operate buses with wind above 40 mph and this storm had winds that reached 60 mph. The weather is moving from west to east and the area of high wind is nearing the east side of the county. Once the wind and weather has subsided we will resume bus transportation and notify parents. Thank you.

Attention parents,
Bus transportation has been temporarily suspended due to a severe thunderstorm that is producing high winds. We will resume afternoon transportation as soon as the high winds subside.
