About
Welcome to your GSCS Nutrition Source!
Dear Parent or Guardian,
Griffin Spalding Nutrition provides healthy and nutritious meals to students at no charge at 18 food service sites.
Our mission is to partner in the educational process by providing quality meals and to create nutrition education opportunities for parents and students to help promote Healthy Children, Ready to Learn. We continue to be excited because Griffin Spalding County Schools (GSCS) will continue to offer meals at no charge to students under the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) for the 2023 - 2024 school year. GSCS offers school breakfast, school lunch, and an after-school snack program.
What is requested of you and your children?
PARTICIPATION
· Please encourage your children to participate daily in our breakfast, lunch, and snack programs. Please encourage your children to maximize their eating experience by selecting all meal offerings. This will not only give them a more satisfying experience but will also provide them with the opportunity to eat more fruits and vegetables. Now is their opportunity to have a voice in their future menus and meal offerings.
· We are asking parents and students to participate in the implementation, periodic review, and update of the local school wellness program. If you are interested in participating in this process, please send your contact information to robert.wheeler@gscs.org.
We recognize that well-nourished children are better equipped to learn. Providing healthy food and nutrition education are key ingredients in educating students to make choices that will develop into life-long healthy eating habits. We commit to excellence, devotion to, and passion for child nutrition. Our program is an enhancement to the educational programs of our District – HUNGRY CHILDREN CANNOT LEARN. The School Nutrition program is operated under the federally funded National School Lunch Act and the Child Nutrition Act. All federal laws regulating the program are administered by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), through the Georgia Department of Education (GA DOE). The program objectives are to safeguard the health and well-being of students by providing nutritious food in a safe environment at no charge and to help ensure that participating children gain a full understanding of the relationship between proper eating and good health.
Sincerely,
Robert Wheeler, Director of Nutrition

Seeking Community Participation & Support
District Level Support & Input
The GSCS District Wellness Steering Committee's goal is to help support schools in implementing wellness goals at each school site. We hope to be a support by providing training and resources to schools that will enable school level wellness goals to be met. We encourage all community stakeholders to review our district wellness policy and to provide feedback/input on its implementation. Please contact the School Nutrition Director if you would like to submit your input or participate in the process.
School Level Support & Input
All schools within GSCS have school wellness teams/committees. Each school would be more than happy to have parents or community members volunteer to help them in their wellness efforts. Please contact your local school principal to participate in building our students' health and wellness habits.
