Students at Moore Elementary School will be spending more time learning outdoors thanks to a Home Depot Foundation grant. On October 12, Team Depot Members from around the region and Griffin-Spalding County School System (GSCS) volunteers worked together, in the rain, to revamp Moore Elementary School’s courtyard into an outdoor learning space.
Volunteers painted over old murals, built tables, refurbished and installed raised flower beds, assembled umbrellas for shade, made improvements to a water feature and added mulch to the playground.
Moore Elementary Administrative Dean of Student Discipline Ron Brown said, “We appreciate the Home Depot Foundation and the Griffin Home Depot store for providing this makeover to the Moore outdoor learning space. This is a wonderful benefit to our students and we are grateful to all of our sponsors for their influence. Though there is still more work to be done, I am excited to see the magic that happens in this space.”
“Home Depot with our Team Depot Foundation allows us to complete community service projects to better the communities that we serve. It was great to work along with Behr Cares of the Behr Paint Company in the Fairmont community in Griffin to complete this project at Moore Elementary School,” said Griffin Home Depot Store Manager Stephanie Lower.
Moore Elementary Principal Dr. Olukoya stated “It does take a village to raise a child and we appreciate those that partner with us to serve children. Thank you to St. George’s Episcopal Church, St. Phillips AME, Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Fresh Start Ministries and Dorm Parents for their contributions to this project. We aim to improve not only our school but our community. Anyone who would like to partner with Moore Elementary to mentor our students are needed and welcomed.”
